White House Installs Plaques Calling Biden Worst President Under Official Obama and Biden Portraits
The White House is literally trolling former presidents with plaques now.
Photos emerged Wednesday evening showing new descriptive plaques installed beneath the official portraits of Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden in the White House Cross Hall. The Biden plaque reportedly describes him as “the worst President in American history.” The Obama plaque contains language characterizing his administration as “divisive” and “damaging to American prosperity.”
These are official government plaques. In the White House. On public display.
I’ve covered every administration since Reagan. I have never seen anything like this. Presidential portraits are displayed as a matter of tradition and respect for the office itself – not for the individual who held it. The plaques typically contain basic biographical information. Date of service. State of origin. Maybe a notable accomplishment.
They do not contain editorials.
The White House press office confirmed the installation but declined to provide the full text of either plaque. A spokesperson said the descriptions “accurately reflect historical assessment” of both presidencies.
Historical assessment. While both men are still alive. While one of them left office less than a year ago.
Theres no legal prohibition against this. The White House is the current presidents residence and office. He can decorate it however he wants within reason. Previous presidents have moved portraits around, redecorated rooms, even removed artworks they didn’t like.
But adding negative commentary to a predecessor’s portrait? That breaks something. Im not sure what to call it exactly. Protocol? Dignity? The basic understanding that the presidency is bigger than any one person?
Whatever it is, its gone now.
The Biden administration had its own awkward moments obviously. Every administration does. But they didn’t install plaques mocking their predecessors.
Former President Obama has not commented. Neither has former President Biden. Their silence is probably wise. What would they even say?
The portraits will hang there with their new plaques until someone decides to change them. Maybe the next administration. Maybe the one after that. Or maybe this is just how we do things now.
I genuinely dont know anymore.
