OpenAI in Talks for Funding That Would Value Company at $750 Billion
Seven hundred and fifty billion dollars.
Let that number sink in for a second. Thats what OpenAI is reportedly being valued at in preliminary funding discussions. According to The Information and picked up by Reuters, the ChatGPT maker is in early talks to raise tens of billions of dollars at a valuation that would make it worth more than the GDP of most countries.
Im going to be honest with you. When I first saw this number I thought it was a typo. It wasnt.
To put this in perspective – Nvidia, the company actually making the chips that power all this AI stuff, is worth about $3.3 trillion. OpenAI would be worth nearly a quarter of that. Except Nvidia has massive revenues and profits and factories and decades of technology. OpenAI has… a really good chatbot and a lot of promises.
Dont get me wrong. ChatGPT changed the world. I use it. You probably use it. Everyone uses it. But $750 billion for a company thats burning cash at an incredible rate and faces existential questions about whether its business model actually works long-term? According to Reuters reporting, these are preliminary talks and details could still change.
The details are still fuzzy because these are preliminary discussions. But what we know is that OpenAI needs money. A lot of it. Running inference on millions of queries costs serious compute. Training the next generation of models costs even more. And everyone from Google to Anthropic to Meta is trying to catch up or surpass them.
The timing is interesting though. This comes right as we’re seeing real evidence that AI infrastructure spending is translating into actual demand. Micron just posted blowout numbers. Data center construction is booming. The hyperscalers are spending like there’s no tomorrow.
Maybe the investors see something we dont. Or maybe this is the peak of the AI hype cycle right before reality sets in. Ive seen both movies before.
What I do know is that two years ago OpenAI was valued at around $80 billion. A year ago it was $157 billion. Now were talking $750 billion. Thats not growth. Thats escape velocity.
The question isnt whether AI is transformative. It is. The question is whether one company – even the company that started this whole thing – is worth three quarters of a trillion dollars when its still figuring out how to actually make money.
I dont have the answer. Neither does anyone else. But someone with very deep pockets is apparently willing to bet they do.
